Staff members from Hamilton General Hospital have launched a campaign to help keep those in need stay warm this winter season.

A so-called ‘mitten fence’ has been put up outside the hospital with mittens, hats and scarves available for anyone who needs them.

The initiative began two years ago and is completely volunteer-driven.

“It’s a pretty unique opportunity we have here at the General because of the location and the particular needs in this community,” said Hamilton General Hospital spokesperson Ann Higgins. “I think the staff are really sensitive to that and it is really heartwarming.”

So far this year, nearly 250 items have been taken from the fence.

Higgins says there have been conversations about building another fence and extending further into the community.
