There’s a mixed bag of releases hitting home video this week.

The Gift

Opening on the same weekend as Fantastic Four and a week after Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut never really took off at the box office. It did receive some great reviews though, currently holding a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The release includes:

  • Feature Commentary with Writer/Director Joel Edgerton
  • Alternate Ending [with Optional Introduction by Writer/Director Joel Edgerton]
  • Deleted Scenes [with Optional Introduction by Writer/Director Joel Edgerton]
  • Karma for Bullies
  • The Darker Side of Jason Bateman

Southpaw

This boxing drama was billed as another knockout performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, and while the actor delivered on that count, the film as a whole didn’t really meet expectations. A lukewarm 59% on Rotten Tomatoes makes this one a good choice for boxing fans or Gyllenhaal fanatics. Special features include:

  • Deleted scenes
  • Southpaw: Inside the Ring
  • Q&A with Cast
  • Extended Training Montage

Pixels

Adam Sandler’s ode to the Atari generation was doomed from the start, and when it finally released it was one of the bigger flops of the year. It found its audience overseas though, pulling in $158.5-million on the foreign market. The few special features included on the release don’t really add anything either:

  • Scene/character breakdowns for Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Dojo Quest, and QBert.
  • God of the Machine: A brief look at Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani’s personal history and role in the film.
  • The Space Invader: A feature on a Space Invaders champion and his cameo in the film.
  • Music videos and a photo gallery.
