The highest grossing film of 2014 – by a pretty slim margin – headlines this week’s home video releases.

As the curtain closed on 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy was the top-grossing film of the year. But that reign didn’t last long as a little film called Mockingjay – Part 1 slowly overtook the Marvel heroes early in 2015 to claim the title. That’s two years in a row now that a Hunger Games movie was the highest grossing film, and the franchise will be going for the threepeat when Mockingjay – Part 2 opens later this year. Special features include an eight part making of documentary, featurettes including a Philip Seymour Hoffman tribute and a look at singer Lorde’s work on the film’s soundtrack, and deleted scenes.

Foxcatcher

When Foxcatcher premiered at Cannes last year, many were excited to see what Capote and Moneyball director Bennett Miller had cooked up next. It went on to win Miller the Best Director Award, but it couldn’t capitalize on any of its future nominations including 2 SAG, 3 Golden Globe, and 5 Oscar nods. In a different year Foxcatcher could have potentially cleaned up at awards, especially in acting categories, but the 2014 awards race was a tough nut to crack. A laughable amount of special features are offered up on the disc: one featurette and two deleted scenes.

The Captive

There’s not a whole lot to say about The Captive, Atom Egoyan’s abduction thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and The Killing’s Mireille Enos. The film was panned when it premiered in competition at Cannes last year and currently sits at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film did manage to pick up four nominations at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards though. It didn’t help that The Captive was released so soon after Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, quickly drawing unfavourable comparisons to the French director’s taught thriller. The disc includes deleted scenes and an alternate ending, plus commentary from Egoyan and a featurette.
