Home bakery shut down

A Burlington mother who turned to baking as therapy after she lost her leg to cancer was told last week that she had to shut down her home business. She was baking to help raise money to pay for a new prosthetic leg but she was shut down after someone reported her to the health department.

“Back in 2007 I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and the cancer was so severe that they had to amputate my leg just above the knee.” Says Patty Deguia.

When she lost her leg, the single mother of three felt like she lost her independence but she gained her confidence back in her kitchen and is now cancer free.

“It has been so incredibly therapeutic and I have met a lot of friends and I think I have become closer to my neighbours because I give a lot of the stuff away.”

Eventually people started to seek out her services and Fat Baby Bakery was born. But someone reported her to the Halton Region Health department for operating an uninspected business from her home and last week she was told she would have to stop selling her baked goods even though there are hundreds of other home businesses just like hers.

Patty says she doesn’t sell enough to register as a home business and she relies on disability to support her children. Baking for her is just a hobby, before she lost her leg she worked as a photographer and she hopes to be able do that again one day
