High police presence in downtown Toronto

Information about a “potential risk” to the Greater Toronto Area has prompted an increase in the number of police officers in Toronto’s downtown core.

Police didn’t officially provide details, but a leaked internal memo says police received credible information about a potential vehicle ramming attack near the CN tower.

Police tweeted earlier that the increased police presence was due to an “unconfirmed, uncorroborated piece of information” relating to the GTA.

By midday, a handful of emergency task force officers patrolled near the CN Tower. Bicycle cops patrolled the area around the Rogers Centre, and a handful of police cruisers parked at intersections in the area.

Tonight the Foo Fighters are playing at the Rogers Centre, and could bring upwards of 60,000 people into the area.

All the venues in the downtown, including the CN Tower remained open for business today, and police just asked people to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior.

“If someone sees something that’s out of place or out of the norm to them, then to then it’s suspicious. We’d like them to do their due diligence in reporting that to police, so we can take an opportunity to see if there’s anything more to it. We’ve continuously encouraged the community to do that, because without the eyes of the community we’ll never succeed.”

York Regional Police also said the public will see an increased police presence around Canada’s Wonderland, just as a precaution, but they also urge people to go about their normal business.
