Helping Fort McMurray

Prime Minister Trudeau urges Canadians to keep donating to the Red Cross, reminding us that the Federal government will match individual donations. There are tens of thousands of people across the country trying to help as best they can including right here in our area.

The Canadian Red Cross has collected nearly $30 million after only a few days of fundraising and say donating money is the best way to help. The Federal and Provincial governments have announced they will match the money that is donated to the Red Cross but only from individual donations.

“It depends on how the donations have come in, the government is matching donations from individuals, but not from companies, or other government entities, corporations or organizations.” Red Cross.

While the thought of donating food and clothing is appreciated the Red Cross says they won’t accept it, because it would cost too much to process and send to Fort McMurray.

The Queenston volunteer firefighters association is holding their annual spaghetti dinner to raise money for the Red Cross, and for the Wood Buffalo firefighters in Northern Alberta. They’ve battled fires before, but can’t imagine the devastation the firefighters in Fort McMurray are faced with.

The Lincoln County Humane Society and their volunteer dog walkers are donating $2 500 to the Edmonton Humane Society which is currently helping displaced Fort McMurray animals and the Oakville Milton Humane Society is collecting pet supplies and Cam-Scott Transport has offered to truck all the donated supplies to Edmonton.
