Hello, My Name is Doris is a comedy co-written by Michael Showalter and Laura Terruso and directed by Showalter. The film, which debuted to rave reviews at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, stars Sally Field, Max Greenfield, Beth Behrs, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Stephen Root, Elizabeth Reaser, Natasha Lyonne, and Tyne Daly.
After a lifetime of being overlooked and ignored, a woman of a certain age finds her world turned upside down by a handsome new co-worker and a self-help seminar that inspires her to take a chance on love in Hello, My Name is Doris, a witty and compassionate late-life coming-of-age-story.
In an interview with RogerEbert.com, Field explained how she was able to help shape the personality of Doris, inside and out. “Costume designer Rebecca Gregg and I really worked on her exterior look. We knew Doris was eccentric but we didn’t really know who she was. We spent three days trying on racks and racks of clothes that we found in studio costume departments and thrift shops. I copied her hairdo from Brigitte Bardot and cut my bangs real short. Then we worked on her interior. Doris seemed to have a borderline personality. She had almost all of the ingredients. I talked to therapists about hoarders and where she might be on the spectrum, from severely impaired to minor-ly. She probably hovered on the borderline of things.”
Hello, My Name is Doris is rated 14A.
