Hello Destroyer is a hockey drama written and directed by Kevan Funk. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and was picked by the festival as one of Canada’s Top 10 films of 2016. It also has four Canadian Screen Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director. The film stars Jared Abrahamson, Kurt Max Runte, Joe Buffalo, Paul McGillion, and Sara Canning.
A young junior hockey player’s life is shattered by an in-game act of violence. In an instant his life is abruptly turned upside down; torn from the fraternity of the team and the coinciding position of prominence, he is cast as a pariah and ostracized from the community. As he struggles with the repercussions of the event, desperate to find a means of reconciliation and a sense of identity, his personal journey ends up illuminating troubling systemic issues around violence.
“I have always been driven, first and foremost, by stories that engage me on a profound level,” says Funk. “And it is always my goal to make work that exists not as a passive experience for an audience but as something that activates them. I believe that, along with entertaining an audience, films can have a genuine sense of agency, something that can be translated directly to the viewer through their experience of watching the film.”
Hello Destroyer is rated 14A.
