After the very dry and hot summer we’ve been having it’s time for some much needed rain, but as the saying goes when it rains it pours. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of Southern Ontario with heavy rainfall expected to begin tonight and some areas could receive more than 6cms.

When the rain comes down hard and fast basements are at high risk. A flood can end up costing you thousands of dollars, not to mention the headache that comes along with it. Pete Karreman owns Omni Basement Systems and says having a sub-pump installed with a battery incase of power outages is one of the best way to protect your home. It’s also not a bad idea to come out and inspect the street drain in front of your house. You’ll want to remove any debris that might obstruct the flow of water.

Andrew Grice works for the City of Hamilton, he says staff are doing the same with the in-let structures. They’ve also emptied they’re nine combined overflow tanks which sit underground so they can collected excess rainwater. Some are as big as 6 olympic swimming pools. According to city officials we do have a slightly more elevated risk of flooding than normal because of the dry summer we’ve been having but thanks to the rain we had over the weekend, we’re in much better shape then we could have been.
