Environment Canada says a heat warning is in effect with “hot and humid” conditions today and Thursday in the Golden Horseshoe Area.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 33 C but with humidex values will feel closer to 40 C. Hamilton, Halton Region, Niagara Region and surrounding areas can expect high heat and humidity.

Officials say these extreme temperatures can affect everyone but those at greater risk include young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Symptoms of heat-related illness can include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Residents are reminded to drink plenty of water even before they feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Also, never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Overnight low temperatures are expected to be 20 to 22 C, providing little relief from the heat.

The weather agency says conditions will improve Thursday evening.
