We just went through the driest June in ten years and it’s left lawns parched and gardens withering, but cranking up the sprinkler may not do much good. Even though your lawn may look yellow and dead, it’s not, it’s just dormant and will eventually return to normal.

Dave Cummins has won 5 trillium awards for his garden. He says if you do water your lawn give it a good soak for 2-3 hours, one night a week.
“I see people watering during the day which is the worst thing to do. You lose more to evaporation than what gets into the grass.”

Another important tip is to leave your grass a little longer so it doesn’t dry out as fast.

Environment Canada says this was the driest June since 2007. In Hamilton 35-40 mm of rain fell, when normal numbers should be 80-85. The heat warning will be in effect until Friday when there’s a chance for much needed rain. Though it won’t be enough rain, to add green to your lawn.
