Costa Rica has secured a spot in the next round of the World Cup. They beat four-time champion, Italy on Friday — the loss devastated fans of the Italian team.

It was a heartbreak for Italy. Costa Rica won their secoond striaght game, 1-0 against team Italia. Fans in both Niagara and Hamilton were shocked.

What started out as cheers and excitement ended 90 minutes later in disappointment for Italian fans.

Hamilton Italia supporters were on the edge of their seats, biting their nails, waiting for a goal. Unfortunately for team Italy, the match didn’t play out in their favour.

“Mica la polo depresto. I feel sad. It’s a sad day today”

“They played poorly, I’m really disappointed with their playing. And we’ll go on.”

Almost 100 fans gathered at La Piazza today and some came all the way from Italy to see it here.

“We came from Italy to see this celebration.”

But today there wasn’t much to celebrate and fans in Niagara Falls are equally feeling the loss. The Owner of Hamilton’s La Piazza is looking forward to Italy’s next game.

Mark Farrugia: “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we were looking for but that’s the Italian team. It’s full of heartbreak and then we come back and we play Uruguay on Tuesday so we’re ready.”

And Italian fans are praying for a win on Tuesday.

Italy could still advance to the next round of the World Cup with either a win or tie against Uruguay next week. The fans we spoke to today are crossing their fingers and hoping for that outcome.
