Members of Hamilton’s Waterfront Trust will be back before city council asking for more money this fall but it’s operated at a loss for 7 straight years.

Hamilton’s Waterfront Trust was created 15 years ago to settle a long standing dispute between the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Harbour Commission. With $6.5million seed money, the trust built a series of waterfront trails, opened the popular Williams Coffee Pub and a year round skating rink and trolley.

It was an ambitious mandate but one mired in controversy. Allegations of accounting discrepancies and lack of oversight have dogged the trust for years, allegations the chair vehemently denies.

This fall the Waterfront Trust will be back in front of city council asking for more money but now that the land has been transferred to the City of Hamilton, many are questioning whether it’s time to pull the plug on the trust.
