About 150 elementary students took to the field, or rather the “pitch” as they compete in Hamilton’s First Junior Cricket Tournament, Friday.

It’s a complicated game that has some similarities with baseball.

When Canada first became a nation back in 1867, cricket was so popular that John A MacDonald declared it the national sport.

Over time, it’s popularity in the county has declined but it sure seems like it’s starting to pick back up again.

The driving force behind the tournament is Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

They ran clinics to train teachers the sport. They say it’s really taking off in Ontario.

12 teams from 12 different schools from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board competed for the top spot.

While only one team will go home the champions, everyone who had fun is a winner.
