“Do nothing” approach on Chedoke Creek spill unacceptable says ministry

The City of Hamilton has been ordered to take remedial measures in response to the Chedoke Creek sewage spill.

The order comes following a Ministry of Environment review of the spill and its environmental impacts on Chedoke Creek and Cootes Paradise.

The city recommended no remedial action be taken.

“A ‘do nothing approach’ is unacceptable and does not address the potential for adverse effect as required by the Environmental Protection Act,” said the ministry in a statement.

Ministry experts say the water quality continues to be impaired and/or could become impaired because of continued release of contaminants in the affected area.

The city has been ordered to take remedial measures, including spot dredging in portions of Chedoke Creek.

The city has until Jan. 22 to submit its remediation plan, which will then be reviewed by the ministry.
