City crews are set to break out their spray cans over the next two days as two, three kilometre long bike lanes are set to be painted along Gage Ave. from Industrial Dr. to Lawrence Rd.

Traffic on Gage Ave. will be narrowed down from two lanes in each direction, to one lane in each direction during the week of Oct. 29 to Nov. 2. Bike lakes will be painted on either side of the street with car parking on sections of the west side of the street.

At three kilomtres each way, the addition expands the city’s growing bike lane network to 206 kilometres.

“On Bay St. our volumes for the summer were peaking at 400 to 500, on Cannon St. where the cycle track is further west through the summer, we saw our volumes peak at 700 plus,” said Daryl Bender, City of Hamilton spokesperson.

Much like when the Bay and Cannon St. bike lanes were introduced, people living along Gage Ave. are offering some push back.

Currently people living on Gage Ave. can’t park their own cars all day everyday. They have to move them during peak driving hours. The city is looking to introduce parking 24-hours a day seven days a week.
