Hamilton’s budget wishlist

Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger and many city councillors will be paying close attention to the provincial budget. They spoke with our Phil Perkins about their expectations. The Mayor also gave his reaction to perceived preferential treatment between Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory over his request for photo radar on city streets, nearly a month after Eisenberger made the same request to the province.

Hamilton politicians were on the same page over what they’d like to see in the provincial budget, with increased funding for social housing being the top priority

“Wanna hear some good news about social housing, affordable housing. It’s one of those issues that we’ve been long talking about. We need to do in partnership with the feds and the province, we’re dealing with serious precarious housing so we’re hoping that the provincial government will come forward with a very aggressive strategy to perhaps work with the federal government.”

An injection of funds to Hamilton’s infrastructure is also on the wish list.

“Further commitment on infrastructure is something we’ve long talked about and they’ve made some commitments already. I think we want to see are actual numbers that they’re willing to put on the table.”

“People complaining about the shape of their streets and that’s a big challenge to get those infrastructure dollars.”

Speaking of the Wynne government, Mayor Eisenberger said he doesn’t feel slighted over the Premier’s quick follow up to Toronto Mayor John Tory’s request to install photo radar on city streets. A request Eisenberger made to the province over a month ago with no response.

“I’m sure the letter will find it’s way to their desk and you know this issue isn’t going anywhere and I think we, and that includes Toronto, are asking for the same kind of consideration.”
