Hamilton to potentially apply larvicides to city for West Nile Virus control

The city of Hamilton Public Health Services says it will apply larvicide in order to prevent West Nile Virus if monitoring of mosquito larvae (immature mosquitos) indicates that there is a need.

According to the city’s website, the current risk of West Nile virus in Hamilton is low.

The city says application of larvicide may start as early as June 1, 2022 and end as late as October 31, 2022.

The larvicides VectoBac 200G, VectoBac 1200L and Vectolax CG will be applied to identified standing surface water located on public properties, while the larvicides Altosid Pellets, Mosquiron 0.12 CRD and Vectolax WSP will be placed into catch basins of storm drains on city street and on selected publicly owned properties in the city.

The city says the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks permitted the application of the products and it will be applied by licensed applicators or trained technicians of Pestalto Environmental Health Services Inc. under contract with the city.
