Hamilton to develop new mixed-income housing community

Hamilton has joined forces with the Caledon Community Collaborative to make a new mixed-income housing community on 7.2 acres of land at 60 Caledon Ave.
According to a news release, after a unique conditional sale, the Caledon Community Collaborative made up of Hamilton East Kiwanis Non-Profit Homes and Victoria Park Community Homes was chosen to develop the property.
“This project represents an incredible opportunity to deliver affordable housing through a partnership of two of our strongest providers, in a way that fosters inclusion and community growth,” said Director of Housing Services, Edward John.
“The ability to house larger households in areas outside of our downtown continues to build on our strategic goals to address housing challenges throughout the city.”
The city’s purchase of the land was made in 2018 by investing $3.13 million from Hamilton’s $50 million Poverty Reduction Investment Fund.
Hamilton says it will also contribute $5.073 million to reduce the cost of the project in order to keep rent prices low.
The Caledon Community Collaborative will be a part of Hamilton is Home’s initiative of developing 3000 affordable units over three years.
It will also be a part of Canada’s National Housing Strategy to provide more homes for Canadians.
Community consultations are targeted for 2021.
