(Update)
Many parents may have groaned when they heard that school buses were cancelled and some schools were closed Monday. But kids were cheering the announcement of a snow day. The unscheduled long weekend meant a day of fun indoors or out. No matter how cold it got at Pier 8, close to the water, parents and their kids bundled up and took advantage of their time off of school to skate and play some hockey.

Jade Finnan: “My mom called the bus people and they said the buses were cancelled so I said I’d like to hang out with my Dad and go skating.”

Albert Finnan: “For me a snow day is skiing, skating, tobogganing, whatever you got eh?”

So this group of fathers and their kids laced up and went for a skate at Pier 8 in Hamilton.

Sienna Pettersen liked watching her brother fall on the ice the best.

Dylan Pettersen usually stays home and watches tv. But on this day something a little more fun with skating and playing hockey.

Carrie Madden is a mother of two: “We woke up and it was beautiful and sunny with 5 inches of powder and Joel said is it a snow day? I said I don’t think so.”

Joel Madden:   “We went down to our neighbours who is in our class and asked is it a snow day and they said ya, and my Mom went Grrrrrr.”

And even though it came as a surprise to many that some schools closed and buses were cancelled in Hamilton, kids made the best of a cold windy day.

Sadie said:   “But it is quite bad, not like it can stop you from going but it’s a bit hard because I had to close my eyes going down the hill.”

Some of these kids started to play outside but it was so bitterly cold they took it inside instead.

At amazing adventures in Hamilton, warmth was on the minds of these kids enjoying a snow day.

Elora Winger:   “Do you like playing inside or outside on a snow day? Inside. Why? Because it’s warmer. Well, we started with shovelling the driveway first so we had some outside activity. But it was just bitterly cold on the face so we did some stuff inside to get some energy out.”

The one thing both parents and kids can agree on about a snow day is that it’s a day to spend quality time with each other whether it’s indoors or outdoors.
