The new owners of Torstar are closing down the Hamilton Spectator classified call centre, taking two dozen jobs to the U.S.

According to Unifor, which represents the employees, NordStar Capital will be moving the jobs to a company in Buffalo on Oct. 19.

There are eight full time and 16 part time positions.

The union is condemning the move and wants a meeting with NordStar’s owners.

“There is no doubt the pandemic has negatively impacted revenue, but it has also highlighted the need for Canadian-owned businesses to support Canadian workers as we build back together from COVID-19,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

NordStar Capital took over the company that owns the Hamilton Spectator, Toronto Star, St. Catharines Standard and several other papers a little more than a month ago.
