The City of Hamilton has chosen a proposal for a sweeping plan to revitalize entertainment facilities downtown.

The city is going ahead with a $500 million pitch from Hamilton Urban Precinct Entertainment Group L.P.

“The Precinct Group” is made up of several entities including LiUNA, Fengate Capital, Meridian Credit Union, Paletta Group, and Carmen’s Group.

The plan includes a modernized arena, renovated convention centre and concert hall and investment in the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

The group will spend $50 million to renovate FirstOntario Centre and take over operations and maintenance.

They’ll re-do the building’s exterior, expand concourse level and offer new amenities like a microbrewery, suites, and hospitality clubs.

“Today is an important step in moving Hamilton forward and reaching its economic potential,” said Hamilton Bulldogs owner Michael Andlauer.

“We’ve always said that our priority would be to stay in this community. This has been our home for 20 years and we look forward to a plan that keeps us here for decades to come.”

The plan also includes new residential housing and office and retail space.

According to its initial bid, the plan would move the Hamilton Convention Centre to the site of Hamilton City Centre.

The current convention centre would be the site of new condos.
