Hamilton announced that on June 17, it surpassed $1 billion worth of construction since the beginning of the year.

2022 now marks the earliest the city has reached the billion-dollar mark in construction value. This milestone represents 3,761 building projects in the residential, institutional, commercial and industrial sectors.

The city says this is the second time Hamilton has reached the billion-dollar mark in the first half of the year, thirteen days earlier than the previous record set last year. The city has consistently reached the $1 billion milestone for over ten years.

“The $1 billion milestone is an indicator of the success of the construction industry in Hamilton, which in turn supports Hamilton’s economic growth, provides employment opportunities, new housing, and places for businesses to thrive,” the city said in a statement.

After two years of working remotely, the Building Division reopened to the public on April 25. The city says the return to both in-person and electronic building permit services provided more options for the public to apply for building permits and reach the milestone.

“Surpassing $1 billion in construction value already this year, the earliest time on record, and coming after we achieved the historic milestone $2 billion worth of building permit value last year, is a strong indication that Hamilton’s economy is roaring ahead. It means jobs are being created and our community is being transformed like never before,” said mayor Fred Eisenberger, in a statement.
