Hamilton police are reminding people to stay away from ice shelves near bodies of water.

They are formed by snow and ice that has been compacted against the the shorelines by wind and waves

Police say the ice shelves are picturesque but can be extremely dangerous.

The uneven terrain and jagged formations can cause serious injuries.

“The hidden cavities could collapse, and an individual could easily fall into icy water and any unexpected and sudden immersion in the frigid waters can result in cardiac arrest, hypothermia and drowning,” said police in a news release.
