Hamilton police are urging a driver involved in a fatal crash in the city’s east end to surrender to police.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to the area of King St. East and Gage Ave. South for reports of a two-vehicle collision.

Police say the driver of one of the vehicles left the scene of the crash. Officers in two police cruisers tracked down the vehicle but the male driver fled from police.

A short time later, the driver was involved in a serious crash at the intersection of Maplewood Ave. and Balsam Ave. South.

Hamilton police say a white Hyundai Sonata was travelling westbound on Maplewood Ave. when a southbound-travelling GMC pickup truck went through a stop sign and struck the sedan.

Hamilton police were called to a collision shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the pickup truck got out of the vehicle and fled on foot towards Gage Park. Police say he did not offer any assistance to the 51-year-old Hamilton woman who was driving the Hyundai.

She was transported to hospital where she later died.

The Collision Reconstruction Until has taken over the investigation.

Detectives are urging the driver to seek legal advice and to himself in to police.

The man is described as being white, in his mid-20s to early 30s, with a skinny build, dark shaggy hair, and no beard. He was wearing a t-shirt and dark coloured pants.

Anyone with information that could help police is asked to contact 905-546-4755 or 905-546-4753.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was also called in to investigate the collisions as police were involved.

Four investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
