Hamilton Police Services Board approves 2.98 per cent police budget increase

The Hamilton Police Services Board voted unanimously for a 2.8 per cent budget increase in a meeting held yesterday.

The proposed budget calls for an expenditure of $177.2 million for the new year.

Almost 91 per cent of that will cover salaries and benefits.

This comes after recent protests at city hall calling to defund police in order to use that money for vulnerable Hamilton citizens.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger showed his support for the new budget at the virtual board meeting.

“I want a police service that has a social conscience,” said the mayor.

He mentioned the importance of issues around homelessness, sexual assault, affordable housing, addiction, and pedophilia.

The proposed budget includes some new positions such as the addition of an equality, diversity, and inclusion specialist.

The  budget was presented by Hamilton police Chief Girt who also announced his retirement at the meeting.

Girt has held his position for over four years and has been with the service for a total of 35.

“It is humbling to watch your acts of kindness, your courage, and tenacity in the face of adversity,” he said.

“Remain stalwart and steadfast and know that you make a difference.”

Chief Girt says he will stay in his position until the end of February.
