A pop-up scrap metal business in Hamilton has been shut down after police discovered an illegal business was operating on the grounds.

Hamilton police executed a search warrant at a commercial property on Wentworth St. North on April 16.

Police allege the pop-up business was buying stolen scrap metal and then selling it out of sea containers and concrete outbuildings during a “24/7 operation.”

They say 14 people were living inside those containers, including three people wanted by police, and a man breaching a court condition.

Investigators say the grounds were littered with garbage and unkempt items.

Police also found $10,000 worth of stolen property including tools and an air rifle.

The non-essential business was charged under city bylaws for operating without a proper license and for violating the COVID-19 emergency act.

Hamilton police are looking to speak with the scrap business owners as the investigation continues.
