City by-law officers are teaming up with Hamilton police to crack down on the number of people driving off-road vehicles illegally within city limits.

The Hamilton police service has two all-terrain vehicles that will be used to patrol rural Hamilton this summer trying to catch people using off-road vehicles.

Within the last year, the police and city by-law has received more than 400 complaints about off-road vehicles.

The rules for using off-road vehicles within city limits are clear. You cannot off-road off your own property unless you have written permission from another land owner. You can’t use it on public property, park trails, beachfront, or on city roadways.

A new off-road vehicle by-law came into effect in the city last year, and since then about 6 tickets have been issued. If caught the minimum fine is $500.
