Hamilton opens cooling centres as heat warnings grip much of southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued heat warnings and special weather statements for much of southern Ontario.
Hamilton’s medical officer of health issued a heat warning, with afternoon temperatures in the low 30s with humidex values near 40.

Cooling centres have been opened across the city, including Hamilton library branches, Ryerson Recreation Centre and Norman Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre.

The city says COVID-19 precautions are in place at these centres, including reduced capacity, contact tracing and mask requirements.

Environment Canada says there is an elevated risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
The agency says hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality.
The weather agency suggests staying in a cool place, drinking plenty of water and avoiding outdoor activities if possible.
