The writs have yet to be drawn up, but the provincial election is already heating up at Hamilton City Hall.

Donna Skelly and Judi Partridge, two Hamilton city councillors are running for provincial office in the next election, against each other for different parties in the same riding.

Tuesday night, Mayor Fred Eisenberger responded to a tweet from a constituent about why councillor Donna Skelly talks about scrapping Hamilton’s LRT as she runs for the Conservatives.

“She is a rookie councillor who does not speak on behalf of the city. Council decided to move forward and she should stop undermining its decision. Doesn’t much care about Hamilton, just wants to be MPP. This is her third attempt. Ward 7 was just a novelty.”

“I’m not going to get into any discussion on social media. If anyone wants to speak to me about political issues, lets talk.” Donna Skelly.

Eisenberger says he’s concerned that Doug Ford, potentially the next Premier or leader of the opposition, is getting the wrong idea about Hamilton’s LRT.

“It’s ironic one day he said he’d fully support LRT, full stop and a number of days later after an apparent discussion with Skelly he changed that position.” Fred Eisenberger.

Skelly says it is her job to bring Hamilton concerns to Queen’s Park.

“I’ve been very clear on my stance on LRT, I don’t think that’s surprising and I think it’s my job to make sure residents in this city are well represented. Am I bringing issues to our party and our leader about our city? Absolutely.”

The election writs should be issued next week, they go out 28 days before the election which is coming up on June 7th. Both Skelly and Partridge say once that happens they will forgo their council pay and concentrate on the election, but they will still attend important city hall meetings and events.
