Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger says goodbye to city hall

After three, four-year terms, Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger says goodbye to city hall.
“It’s a bittersweet day! I’m comfortable with the decision I made to not run, but at the same time, leaving behind some great projects and great people,” Eisenberger said.
Today is Eisenberger and the outgoing city council’s last full day in office before the new team takes over. Eisenberger is Hamilton’s longest-serving mayor since 2001. He was first elected in 2006 and elected again in 2014 and 2018.
“I’m very proud of the investments that are happening and what’s in the cue, so I thought maybe now it’s time for for somebody else to take their energy and enthusiasm and take it to the next level,” Eisenberger said.
Projects Eisenberger has been a part of include the Hamilton sign, West Harbour development, and new film studios.
Hamilton, like other cities, has seen its ups and downs over the years but Eisenberger says initiatives like the LRT are achievements he will always be proud of.
While Eisenberger prepares to say goodbye, and a new mayor says hello, he’s confident that the city is in good hands.
“I think she’s well positioned to do a great job, she’s got the talent, the experience, and certainly the know-how to be an effective mayor, and I wish her well,” Eisenberger said about mayor-elect Andrea Horwath.
Eisenberger says he’ll miss seeing those who have worked alongside him, “including my office staff. My work wife, and other family members that have been part of the work that I’ve been able to do that have been a part of our collective success.”
The inaugural city council meeting is set to take place Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Doors at the Hamilton Convention Centre open at 5:45 p.m.
If you can’t make it in person, the event will be available on the city of Hamilton’s YouTube channel.
