Hamilton man faces charges for abusing dog in disturbing video

A Hamilton man is facing three provincial charges after videos showed him hitting and dragging his dog down a sidewalk, horrifying witnesses in late June.

Hamilton police confirmed to CHCH News that Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) recently served the man with three summons under the provincial animal welfare service act for causing distress, permitting distress and failure to provide medical attention.

The man will now be required to appear in a provincial offences court.

There is no minimum, but causing distress to an animal can result in a maximum fine of up to $130,000 or two years in prison, or both.

On July 8, PAWS seized the dog and transported it to a veterinarian for an evaluation.

The video was recorded on June 30 and caused outrage within the community. It showed a man hitting and screaming at the dog on Dundas St. before dragging the dog down the sidewalk.
