A Hamilton man who was initially charged with aggravated assault in a family dispute has had his charge upgraded to manslaughter in the death of his mother in May.

On May 31, Hamilton police responded to a report of a man who had attacked several family members at their residence on Hamilton Mountain.

During the investigation, police found out that the same man had attacked his 86-year-old mother a week earlier. The woman was in hospital recovering from her injuries at that time.

Gojko Spanovic, 59, was arrested on May 31 and charged with several criminal offences, including aggravated assault upon his mother, Milka Spanovic. She remained in hospital and died on June 6.

At the time of his arrest, Spanovic was on two separate release orders for alleged criminal offences committed against members of his family, also in 2024.

Hamilton police’s homicide unit took over the investigation and on Oct. 9 received forensic information linking Milka’s death to injuries sustained in the May attack.

As a result, the aggravated assault charge against Gojko was upgraded to manslaughter.

Gojko was also charged with a number of offences related to the family attacks, including various assault charges, forcible confinement charges and two counts of threatening death, among other charges.

Anyone with information pertaining to Gojko Spanovic and the assaults is asked to contact Det. Trevor Bland at 905-546-4921.
