Hamilton man arrested in overnight fire at Barton St. apartment building

A man has been arrested following a suspicious fire in central Hamilton overnight.

Fire crews were called to an apartment building on Barton St. E, near the library’s Barton branch, around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

There was heavy smoke coming from an upper floor unit when they arrived.

No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at about $100,000.

Hamilton Police arrested a 32-year-old man who lives in the building. He’s been charged with arson – disregard for human life.
