Hamilton house fire sparks $40K in damage

No one was injured after a house fire in Hamilton caused major damage at home early Saturday morning.
Fire fighters were called just after 3 a.m. for reports of a house fire at 108 Chestnut Avenue in the Gibson neighbourhood, south of Cannon Street East between Birch Avenue and Sherman Avenue North.
When they arrived, heavy smoke was billowing from a the second floor window of the two-storey house and three people were already outside.
The fire and smoke were quickly put out.
“The Red Cross was contacted,” said Claudio Mostacci, spokesperson for Hamilton Fire. “All the utilities in the house were shut off.”
Mostacci added, careless smoking caused the fire.
Damage is estimated to be $40,000.
