A march to represent the peacefulness of Islam made its way through Hamilton today.

The group from the Al-Mustafa Islamic Centre of Hamilton carried signs saying ‘we stand united against terrorism’ and the ‘grandson of the prophet Mohammed is a symbol of freedom and dignity’. Organizers say ISIS and Al-Qaeda have hijacked Islam and they don’t represent the religion’s true values.

The centre’s director Amin Altahir says the purpose of the march is to show the beauty of Islam. “We try to show there is another face of Islam.”

“Islam is all about morals, it’s all about values; killing people, beheading people, that’s not part of Islam.”

“If you kill an innocent person, it’s like you kill the whole of humanity. That’s what Islam teaches.”

The march takes place annually by the Al-Mustafa Islamic centre which represents the Iraqi-Shia community in Hamilton. It says it’s already received one threat this year which police are still investigating.
