On this Labour Day, a day when many people will be out enjoying the last bit of summer, Hamilton Fire officials are reminding them to abide by signage and to be extra cautious on trails near gorges and waterfalls. This comes after fire crews were called three separate rope rescues within a 2.5 hour span.

The first call came in at around 12:25pm for a woman who fell more than nine metres into the gorge at Sherman Falls in Ancaster. She was injured but conscious when crews arrived on scene. She was taken to hospital.

Then, about two hours later, fire crews were called again for a rope rescue, this one at Tew’s Falls in Dundas. Five people and one dog had to be rescued just after 2:00pm. They were all uninjured.

The third call of the day came about an hour later for a man and woman who became stranded in the gorge at Felkner’s Falls. They were also not injured.

Claudio Mostacci with Hamilton Fire says these recent calls bring the number of rope rescue calls to 20 this year. That number beats the 2015 total of 19, with four months still left to go this year.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority says the slopes and edges of the escarpment can be unstable and can pose fall hazards. There are numerous signs posted along the trails reminding people not to cross barriers, climb, or bypass fencing by going off the designated trails and lookout points.
