For Fire Prevention Week residents in Hamilton and surrounding areas are being reminded of important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from fire.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Cooking safety starts with you.”

The Hamilton Fire Department says unattended cooking is one of the main causes of residential structure fires in the city.

Ensuring to use a timer to avoid overcooking, turning pot handles away from the stove’s edge, keeping a lid close by, and if a small grease fire starts, using the lid to cover are some important cooking safety tips to keep in mind.

Fire Prevention Week happens during the week around October 9 in Canada and the U.S. to commemorate the great Chicago fire in 1871.
