Hamilton firefighter taken to hospital following early morning blaze

A firefighter has been taken to hospital following an early morning blaze at a vacant building in Hamilton.
Emergency responders were called to 202 Canon St. E around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and a well-involved fire at the large two-storey building.
Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says the fire started on the first floor of the building but made its way up to the second floor and roof area.
“While conducting interior operations, crews determined that the building was undergoing some renovations and there were a number of hazards including holes in the floors,” said Cunliffe.

Additional crews from across the city were called in to help due to the size of the structure.
The fire was quickly brought under control within about 20 minutes.
Cunliffe says no one was found inside the building.
A firefighter was taken to hospital after suffering a hand injury.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
Officials say there is extensive property damage.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
