Hamilton fire caused by ‘careless smoking’

A man is clinging to his life after being rescued from a fire in his basement apartment Saturday night.

Hamilton firefighters responded to a fire at 461 King Street East just before 10 p.m.

They found the man unconscious in the apartment and performed CPR.

Police say they believe the fire started in the bedroom.

The man was transported to Hamilton General Hospital.

The estimated damage is about $25,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office was called in. They determined the fire was caused by careless smoking.
