Thousands of drivers use the escarpment every day in Hamilton but there are new concerns about its safety. The east leg of the Sherman access remains closed, after rocks and debris ended up on the road Saturday road.

Brian Hughes from the city of Hamilton says the soggy weather is causing erosion on certain areas of Hamilton’s escarpment. He says the city doesn’t routinely inspect the escarpment for erosion that may cause falling rocks or debris. The last time they did was in 2015. When asked if the city of Hamilton is going to be more vigilant of escarpment erosion Hughes says its up for discussion.

“If this is going to become a regular feature with climate change then we do need to look at how we are handling all the escarpment accesses”

The east leg of the Sherman access will remain closed until further inspection. City patrol crews watch for any falling debris or any movement on the escarpment but getting crews on top to actually asses the erosion and see if anything is at risk is a big challenge because those people need to be trained to work at heights.
