Hamilton crime rates show decline amid recent crime incidents

This past weekend there were several crimes in a very short period. Guns were involved, and in some cases residents had to stay in their homes while police hunted for a suspect.

It can sometimes seem like crime is spinning out of control, but according to data we received today from Hamilton police, certain types of crimes are actually down.

Police were called to Radison Lane in east Hamilton Sunday morning to investigate a shooting.

For several hours, local residents were asked to stay in their homes while police searched for another suspect.

Police say they arrested one suspect for possession of a prohibited weapon.

Some people in Hamilton are concerned about crime, with some wondering if it is getting worse.

An alarming case involving a 17-year-old with a loaded handgun that was equipped with a full auto switch resulted in the arrest of the minor from Toronto.

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, just after 10 p.m., police were called to Mountain Avenue North and Jones Street. A 19-year-old Hamilton man was also taken into custody.

On Monday, Hamilton police provided CHCH News with the following statistics, so far in 2023, there have been: nine homicides, with five involving guns, 31 shootings, with 15 people charged — that is down 24 per cent since the same time last year.

Meanwhile, the most recent crime statistics from Statistics Canada are from last year. In some cases, the number of some types of crime have actually gone down in Hamilton.

The crime severity index in 2021 was 68.12, in 2022 it was 64.98

Another recent incident was the Radison Lane shooting followed another shooting late Friday night on the Stoney Creek Mountain.

A resident told CHCH News he was in his bedroom when a random bullet came flying through the outside wall, went through his mattress and hit him in the arm.

He’s recovering from the gunshot wound and said he didn’t know who fired the bullet behind his house.
