Hamilton councillors debate Horizon merger

Hamilton city councillors are in a special meeting today, discussing the potential merger of four local electricity distributors.

City staff have recommended council approve Horizon Utilities’ merger plan that would result in Hamilton holding the third largest stake in a new utility serving nearly a million customers in York and Peel regions, as well as Barrie, Hamilton, and St Catharines.

Horizon says the merger will reduce costs, but some city councillors are worried about the loss of local control.
