A Hamilton apartment has been gutted by fire this morning.

Firefighters responded to 1536 King Street East, east of Gage Park, just after 3 a.m., where they found a top-floor unit of a three-storey apartment building fully engulfed in flames.

All tenants of the building’s six units were accounted for, but a man who lived in the gutted apartment was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

King Street was closed between London and Province until about 6:30 a.m. as firefighters cleaned up.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.  Damage to the building is estimated at $200,000.

The Red Cross has been notified as the building’s other tenants may not be able to return to their apartments.
