Halton Police warn about new extortion letter scam

Halton Police are warning residents about an extortion letter scam making its way around.
They say they have received multiple complaints about these letters, which are typed and sent through Canada Post.
According to police, the typed letter tells the victim that a person in their life has hired the writer to harm them in some way.
The writer offers to deny the request and reveal the person who wants to hurt them if the victim makes a non-traceable bitcoin payment.
Police say the letters can be convincing, often being tailored to an occupant of the home, but they are a scam.
There have been reports of similar letters throughout the GTA.
Police are investigating the source of the letters.
They say if you get one, you can report it to their non-emergency line at 905-825-4747.
