A Halton police officer has been charged with carelessly handling his police-issued gun after it was accidentally fired while he was on duty in January.

Constable Jordan Lee, a six-year member of the Halton Regional Police Service, is facing one count of careless use of a firearm.

The charges stem from an incident in Burlington on January 29 when Const. Lee was handling his weapon during the course of his duties and it accidentally fired.

No one was injured during the incident, but as per policy, all events where a service member discharged their firearm while on duty are investigated, whether it was intentional or not.

In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Const. Lee has been suspended with pay and is expected to appear in court in Milton on April 3, 2024.

This follows a recent case surrounding a Hamilton police officer who was found guilty of mishandling his service weapon and is set to be dismissed from his position following a Police Services Act hearing.
