If you live in Halton region and have an unwanted gun in your home, Halton Police want you to call them.

They’re conducting a firearms and weapons amnesty for the next ten days which they hope will make Halton safer. This is the region’s second weapons amnesty.

Last year they collected guns, a phone taser, knives and other martial arts-related weapons. Police caution people to not go in to a station with your unwanted gun; call police and they will come and pick it up from you, no questions asked.

Brad Murray of Halton Police explains the force does this because they fear weapons can get in to the hands of children or thieves who break in to homes. “We seized 180 firearms last year, none of those guns turned out to be crime guns.”

“What we do is testing on all the firearms seized and although it’s an amnesty and the guns are turned in without any question, we still have an obligation to investigate to see if they were involved in any type of crime, because it still may help us with an investigation down the road.”

All guns collected are destroyed. Police say gun violence is minimal in Halton: in the last year, less than five acts of crime involved firearms.
