Halton Police have completed their month-long firearms and weapons amnesty.

Between October and November, police responded to pick-up requests from Halton residents looking to surrender and dispose of firearms and weapons. Brad Murray says the HRPS collected about 180 firearms, 40 knives and 200 pounds of ammunition.

“The firearms will all be analyzed by a firearms verifier and we’ll be checking to see that none of the guns were involved in crimes. Once that’s done and we’ve decided which guns which the information will be sent to forensic sciences and they will deem based on criteria, which guns will be held in museums for some historic purpose and which ones will be disposed of.”

Police say the goal is to create a safer community by removing the threat of violent weapons from the community.
