The most creative artists from Halton elementary schools put their best work up for critique today for the third annual Art Odyssey competition.

Students from 28 Halton region schools entered the competition with works that ranged from brilliant to bizarre, from drawing to paintings to sculpture and photography.

All were on display today at Pine Grove Elementary in Oakville. Art teacher Martin Kay started the event three years ago because competitions that reward athletes and scientists, for example, are common in the school board.

I think the students in visual arts really don’t have a place to showcase their talents,” says Kay. “Many might be great at music, gym and science, but they’re also great at visual arts and they don’t have a place to be recognized for that.”

Many students spend months working on their submissions, which end up in places of honour in their homes. The winners were announced this afternoon and presented with medals.
