Haldimand mayor charged under election act

Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley will go up against four charges accusing her of violating the Municipal Elections Act later this year.

The charges stem from when Bentley was a candidate for mayor and allege she mishandled her campaign’s contributions and expenditures.

Court documents indicate that the mayor breached the act by incorrectly filing financial campaign contributions, accepting cash in excess of $25, not depositing all contributions to her official campaign bank account and not ensuring all of her campaign’s expenses were paid from the same official bank account.

The court case is scheduled for April 16 and will be held in the Cayuga Courthouse at 1:30 p.m.

CHCH News reached out to John Pappas, Bentley’s lawyer, who acknowledged the documents. “We are reviewing these documents and will be advising Mayor Bently.”
